Embryoid bodies, light micrograph

Embryoid bodies, coloured light micrograph. Embryoid bodies (EBs) are aggregates of differentiating embryonic stem (ES) cells. They are formed when ES cells are cultured in suspension. As the cells mature there is an increase in cell number and complexity. ES cells are pluripotent, they are able to differentiate into any of the 200 hundred cell types in the body. As the cells in the EBs differentiate they form the three germ layers, from which all tissues are formed. ES cells are a potential source of cells to repair damaged tissues in diseases such as Parkinsons and insulin-dependent diabetes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of embryoid bodies, as captured through a colored light micrograph. Embryoid bodies (EBs) are clusters of differentiating embryonic stem (ES) cells that form when these remarkable cells are cultured in suspension. As they mature, EBs undergo a fascinating transformation characterized by an increase in both cell number and complexity. What makes ES cells truly extraordinary is their pluripotency - the ability to differentiate into any of the 200 diverse cell types found within our body. Within these EBs, as ES cells embark on their journey towards specialization, they begin forming the three germ layers from which all tissues originate. This process holds immense potential for medical advancements, particularly in diseases such as Parkinson's and insulin-dependent diabetes where damaged tissues require repair. Through this mesmerizing image, we gain insight into the world of developmental biology and its profound implications for medicine. The false coloring technique used here enhances our understanding of how these cells interact and evolve during culture. It serves as a poignant reminder that within each aggregate lies the promise of regeneration and healing. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into nature's wonders at microscopic levels – reminding us that even at this scale, there is boundless beauty waiting to be discovered.
