Ancient Arabic apparatus

Illustration of ancient Arabic apparatus for distilling rosewater showing 1, a series of glass flasks heated by steam. 2, glazed flasks heated directly, 3, an illustration of tin apparatus and 4, apparatus for steam distillation. During the golden age of Arab Science the Arabs developed and refined the distillation process. Around 1000 AD Avicenna (Ibn Sina) described the distillation of rose oil (rose water) from rose petals. The apparatus shown at (1) is based on a 13th century drawing of a distillation plant in Damascus consisting of multiple units for producing rose water. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an ancient Arabic apparatus used for distilling rosewater, shedding light on the remarkable advancements made during the golden age of Arab Science. The illustration reveals four distinct components: firstly, a series of glass flasks heated by steam; secondly, glazed flasks directly exposed to heat; thirdly, a tin apparatus; and finally, an apparatus designed specifically for steam distillation. Dating back to around 1000 AD, this ingenious method was described by Avicenna (Ibn Sina), who detailed the process of extracting rose oil (rose water) from delicate rose petals. The depicted apparatus at number one is based on a 13th-century drawing originating from Damascus - a renowned center for luxury goods production and exportation. Beyond its exquisite fragrance and use as perfume, rose water held significant medicinal value in ancient times. This historical artifact not only highlights the mastery achieved by Arab scientists but also underscores their profound contributions to distillation techniques. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to witness the ingenuity that shaped our understanding of perfumes and medicinal practices. It serves as a testament to the rich history of distillation and its pivotal role in shaping civilizations throughout centuries. Let us marvel at this relic from Damascus while acknowledging its significance within the broader context of Arabic science's golden era.
