EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the Lostwithiel Pageant in Cornwall, taken in December 1985. The annual Christmas pageant had flourished since its inception in 1980, thanks to the efforts of local historian and Cornish advocate Catherine Rachel John. By this time, the group had expanded to include approximately 30 dedicated members. Gathered at the shelter on the Parade, which has now been replaced by a Community Centre as their meeting place, these passionate individuals embarked on a joyous procession throughout town. Accompanied by the enchanting melodies of carols played by the town band, they filled Lostwithiel's streets with festive cheer. The men within this vibrant group proudly represented various revered Cornish saints. Dressed in traditional attire and adorned with symbolic accessories such as angel wings and halos, they brought an air of authenticity to this heartwarming celebration. In this particular moment frozen in time by photographer Jonathan Barker, we witness Mary and Joseph standing alongside an ethereal angel figure beneath a shining star. Their presence evokes feelings of reverence for the nativity story that lies at Christmas' core. This remarkable image serves as a testament to both tradition and community spirit—a reminder that even amidst modernity's encroachment, cherished customs can endure through shared passion and dedication.
