EDITORS COMMENTS
After a 53-year wait, Winifred Finding finally had her moment as the Fowey Regatta Queen in August 1992. Originally chosen for the title in 1939, her crowning was postponed indefinitely due to the outbreak of World War II. However, on this special day, surrounded by sashes and flower posies, Mrs. Finding's dream became a reality. The long-awaited ceremony took place within the picturesque grounds of Fowey Hall Hotel, presided over by Rusty Eplett, chairman of the Regatta Committee. Captured beautifully by photographer Jonathan Barker, this print immortalizes that joyous occasion. In this heartwarming image, Mrs. Finding stands proudly with one of her attendants named Phylis Newton. Both ladies radiate elegance and grace as they showcase their Cornish heritage through their traditional attire - from knickerbockers to hats adorned with flowers. As she holds a cushion displaying a regal crown symbolizing her newfound status as queen, Mrs. Finding's smile speaks volumes about her long-held anticipation and fulfillment at last. This photograph is not just an emblematic representation of personal triumph but also serves as a reminder of resilience during challenging times. It encapsulates the spirit and determination that prevailed even amidst wartime chaos. Preserved now within the archives of Royal Cornwall Museum, this image captures an extraordinary story that continues to inspire generations.
