Distinguished Service Order Medal, First World War 1914-1918
This medal was awarded to Lieutenant Colonel F. Call at Buckingham Palace on 26th July 1919. It is one of 17 campaign medals awarded to members of the Call family, now in the museum collection. The medals date from the Peninsular War (1807-1814) to the Great War (1914-1918). The Call family served with the Royal Irish Regiment, which until 1881 was known as the 18th Regiment of Foot. It was also known as the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot and the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot. The regiment was disbanded in 1922. The Distinguished Service Order is an operational gallantry award given for highly successful command and leadership during active operations. The Distinguished Service Order Medal was instituted by Queen Victoria in 1886 to reward individual instances of distinguished service in war. The medal is a white enamelled cross, edged in gold, with a red enamelled centre bearing a gold crown surrounded by a green enamelled laurel wreath. The reverse is of similar design with the exception of the centre which bears the Royal Cypher of King George V, a crown with the letters " GVR" underneath. The ribbon features vertical stripes of blue and red with decorated gold bars at the top and bottom. TRURI : 1931.40.53

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Distinguished Service Order Medal awarded to Lieutenant Colonel F. Call during the First World War. The medal, now part of the museum's collection, is one of 17 campaign medals received by members of the esteemed Call family. Spanning from the Peninsular War to the Great War, these medals bear witness to a rich military heritage. The Call family served with great distinction in the Royal Irish Regiment, formerly known as the 18th Regiment of Foot. This renowned regiment was disbanded in 1922 but left an indelible mark on history. The Distinguished Service Order Medal itself is a symbol of exceptional command and leadership during active operations. Instituted by Queen Victoria in 1886, this prestigious award features a white enamelled cross with gold edging and a red enamelled center adorned with a golden crown encircled by a laurel wreath. On its reverse side lies King George V's Royal Cypher – a crown accompanied by "GVR" letters. The ribbon accompanying this distinguished medal boasts vertical stripes of blue and red, complemented by ornate gold bars at both ends. It serves as an elegant reminder of bravery and sacrifice exhibited throughout Lieutenant Colonel F. Call's remarkable military career. Through this evocative print captured by Mike Searle at Royal Cornwall Museum (not affiliated with any company), we are transported back in time to honor not only one individual's valor but also an entire lineage devoted to serving their country with unwavering dedication.
