EDITORS COMMENTS
19 Squadron's Gloster Gauntlet I: A Pioneering RAF Fighter of the Interwar Period This evocative photograph captures the sleek lines and powerful presence of a Gloster Gauntlet I fighter aircraft of 19 Squadron, Royal Air Force (RAF), as it sits proudly on the tarmac in 1935. Taken by renowned aviation photographer, Charles E. Brown, this image offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of early RAF fighter aviation. The Gloster Gauntlet I, a biplane design with a metal fuselage and fabric-covered wings, was a significant development in RAF fighter technology during the interwar period. Its introduction marked a departure from the open-cockpit, wooden biplane fighters of the First World War. The Gauntlet I was equipped with a powerful Rolls-Royce Goshawk engine, which provided an impressive top speed of 153 miles per hour. The aircraft in this photograph bears the distinctive markings of 19 Squadron, which was one of the oldest and most decorated units in the RAF. Established in 1912, the squadron saw action in both World War I and World War II. The Gauntlet I was just one of many advanced aircraft types that 19 Squadron flew during the interwar years as part of its commitment to maintaining the RAF's technological edge. This photograph not only showcases the technical prowess of the Gloster Gauntlet I but also highlights the dedication and professionalism of the RAF personnel who operated these pioneering machines. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the crucial role that the RAF played in the development of military aviation during the interwar period, paving the way for the advanced fighter aircraft that would come to define the Second World War and beyond.
