People bathe on the Tec river as they are on the road to Mount Roraima, near Venezuelas border with Brazil January 13, 2015. A mysterious table-topped mountain on the Venezuela-Brazil border that perplexed 19th century explorers and inspired " The Lost World" novel is attracting ever more modern-day adventurers. Once impenetrable to all but the local Pemon indigenous people, now several thousand trekkers a year make the six-day hike across Venezuelas savannah, through rivers, and up a narrow path that scales Mount Roraimas 600-meter cliff-faces. While that is a help to Venezuelas tottering tourism industry and brings revenues to local communities, it is also scattering a prehistoric landscape with unwanted litter. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo, taken on January 13,2015, we witness the enchanting beauty of the Tec river as people indulge in a refreshing bath while embarking on their journey to Mount Roraima. Nestled near Venezuela's border with Brazil, this mystical table-topped mountain has long intrigued explorers and even served as inspiration for "The Lost World" novel. Today, it continues to allure modern-day adventurers from all corners of the globe. Once an impenetrable terrain accessible only to the indigenous Pemon people, Mount Roraima now welcomes thousands of trekkers annually who brave a six-day hike across Venezuela's vast savannahs, rivers, and narrow paths that scale its towering 600-meter cliff-faces. While this influx of visitors provides much-needed support to Venezuela's struggling tourism industry and benefits local communities economically, it also brings along an unfortunate consequence – litter. As these intrepid travelers traverse through this prehistoric landscape filled with wonder and awe-inspiring vistas at every turn captured by Carlos Garcia Rawlins' lens for Reuters Images – they must be mindful of preserving its pristine beauty. The scattered debris left behind serves as a reminder that responsible tourism is crucial in safeguarding our natural treasures for generations to come. This photograph stands as both a testament to human curiosity and resilience but also highlights the urgent need for sustainable practices among those fortunate enough to explore such extraordinary places like Mount Roraima.
