Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, c 1927

Passengers waiting for a train, at Eskdale Green station on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, by HGW Household, about 1927. The R & E R opened in 1875 between Dalegarth and Ravenglass. It was used for the transportation of iron ore, as well as for carrying passengers. The line closed in 1913 when the iron mine closed, due to a flood. The line later re-opened on a 15 gauge, again to carry passengers and ores. It has been preserved as miniature railway

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1927, capturing a moment at Eskdale Green station on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway. Passengers eagerly await their train, their anticipation palpable in the air. The photographer, HGW Household, skillfully frames this scene with an artistic eye. The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway has a rich history dating back to its opening in 1875. Originally used for transporting iron ore and passengers alike, it played a vital role in the local industry. However, tragedy struck when a devastating flood forced the closure of both the railway and the iron mine in 1913. Fortunately, this resilient line was not forgotten. It re-emerged later as a miniature railway operating on a narrow gauge of just 15 inches. Its purpose shifted primarily towards carrying passengers once again but still retained its capacity for transporting ores. Today, thanks to preservation efforts by dedicated enthusiasts and organizations like National Railway Museum, this picturesque railway continues to charm visitors from around the world. Its scenic route through breathtaking landscapes is now enjoyed purely for leisurely purposes rather than commercial use. As we gaze upon this timeless image frozen in time, we are reminded of how railways have shaped our past while continuing to captivate our imaginations today.
