EDITORS COMMENTS
Caption: During the Allied occupation of the airfield at Monte Corvino in Southern Italy, RAF Servicing Commandos encountered a treacherous surprise. Aerial bombs had been cunningly hidden beneath the surface of the landing ground, rigged to explode as land mines. Undeterred by this perilous obstacle, these brave RAF "advance guards" worked tirelessly to clear wreckage and repair damage, ensuring that the airfield could be used by Allied aircraft. In this print from September 1943, we catch a glimpse of an RAF bomb disposal squad taking a well-deserved break on the wings of an obsolescent R0 37 Cis Italian biplane. Amidst their crucial mission, they pause for a hurried meal and find solace in each other's company. This snapshot not only captures a moment of respite amidst chaos but also serves as a testament to the unwavering determination and camaraderie displayed by these servicemen during World War II. Their tireless efforts were instrumental in making Monte Corvino airfield fit for use once again. As we reflect on this historical image from Memory Lane Prints, it reminds us of the sacrifices made by those who served in armed forces during Operation Avalanche and throughout the Italian campaign. Their bravery and resilience continue to inspire generations today.
