In this print from Memory Lane Prints, we see Terry McDermott, the mischievous joker of Newcastle United, dressed up as an Arab Sheikh. The year is 1983, and McDermott has hatched a brilliant practical joke after reading reports about soccer-crazed Arabs in Saudi Arabia wanting their beloved Kevin Keegan. With his plot fully formed, McDermott arrives unannounced at United's Benwell training ground to discuss transfer business with manager Arthur Cox. However, it doesn't take long for both Cox and Keegan to catch on to the ruse. Laughter fills the air as everyone realizes they have fallen victim to one of Terry's legendary pranks. This photograph captures not only a moment of lighthearted fun but also showcases the camaraderie shared among teammates during those vibrant 1980s football years. It serves as a reminder that even amidst intense competition and pressure on the field, there is always room for laughter and humor off it. As we gaze upon this image today, we are transported back to a time when jokes were innocent yet cleverly executed; when players like Terry McDermott brought joy not only through their skills but also through their playful antics.
