EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the indomitable spirit of Miss Sylvia Pankhurst, a prominent suffragette and women's rights activist in early 1913. Having recently recovered from a hunger strike, Miss Pankhurst finds herself being re-arrested under the notorious Prisoners (Temporary Discharge for Ill-Health) Act 1913, commonly known as the Cat and Mouse Act. Under this oppressive legislation, suffragettes who had pushed their bodies to the brink through starvation were temporarily released by the Home Secretary but required to report back to prison once they regained their health. However, Miss Pankhurst defied these unjust laws by evading her return to Holloway Prison on eight separate occasions. The Scotland Yard Special Branch detectives tasked with apprehending her faced an ongoing game of cat and mouse as they repeatedly sought to bring her back into custody. This image stands as a testament to Miss Pankhurst's unwavering determination in fighting for gender equality and human rights during this tumultuous period. Set against the backdrop of social unrest in early 20th century Britain, this black-and-white photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by courageous individuals like Miss Sylvia Pankhurst in their relentless pursuit of justice. It symbolizes both the resilience of those involved in demonstrations for women's suffrage and sheds light on an important chapter in our collective history.
