Otters are such expert swimmers that one tends to take their aqua a tics very much for

Otters are such expert swimmers that one tends to take their aqua a tics very much for granted. But, curiously, they don t take to water that easily. Have to be pushed in by their parents more often than not. So when George, and 18-Month-old oriental clawless otter, arrived on his own at Cleothorpes Zoo, Linca the staff was with the unusual task of teachign him to swim. George is pictured having lessons in a dolphin pool from the curator Keith ceaney, 23. He climbs on th his insturctors head when he tires the whole tricky business, which only goes to whow that at some the humans can be just as entertaining as the animals. Having tired of his swimming lesson, George the otter has a rest on Keith Reaneys head. September 1966 P004235

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming vintage photo print, we are reminded of the incredible swimming abilities of otters. Often taken for granted, their aquatic skills are truly remarkable. However, it is interesting to note that these expert swimmers do not easily take to water on their own. They often require a little nudge from their parents to dive in and explore. Meet George, an adorable 18-month-old oriental clawless otter who found himself at Cleothorpes Zoo without his family. The dedicated staff at the zoo took on the unusual task of teaching him how to swim. In this snapshot captured in September 1966, George can be seen having swimming lessons in a dolphin pool under the guidance of curator Keith Reaney. As George grows tired during his lesson, he finds comfort and support by climbing onto Keith's head. This endearing moment showcases the unique bond between animals and humans while highlighting our ability to provide entertainment even for creatures as captivating as otters. This delightful photograph serves as a nostalgic reminder of a time when zoos played an important role in educating visitors about wildlife conservation efforts and fostering connections between people and animals. It captures both the determination of young George learning to navigate through water and the dedication of caretakers like Keith Reaney who ensure these precious creatures thrive in their environments.
