EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the essence of Zoroastrian fire worship as it was practiced in the late 19th century at Baku, in what is now Azerbaijan. The ancient religion of Zoroastrianism, originating in Persia over 3,000 years ago, holds fire as a sacred element, representing purity, light, and the presence of the deity Ahura Mazda. In this scene, a Zoroastrian priest, dressed in traditional attire, stands before a sacred fire, his hands raised in prayer. The fire burns brightly in a metal brazier, surrounded by offerings of food and other materials. The smoke from the offerings rises up towards the heavens, carrying the prayers of the faithful. The setting for this ritual is Baku, a city located on the Caspian Sea, which was once a significant center of Zoroastrianism. The religion spread throughout Persia and Central Asia, but was particularly strong in the region around Baku. Despite the passage of time and the spread of other religions, Zoroastrianism continues to be practiced by small communities, most notably the Parsees of India. The fire temples of Baku, however, have long since been abandoned, and the once-thriving Zoroastrian community has dwindled. This image offers a rare glimpse into a rich and ancient religious tradition, one that has shaped the history and culture of Iran and beyond. The enduring allure of the Zoroastrian faith, with its emphasis on morality, purity, and the power of fire, continues to captivate scholars, travelers, and seekers of spiritual enlightenment.
