EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time as Crown Prince Peter of Yugoslavia (1904-1941) is seen here with his brothers, Tomislav (1908-1975) and Andrej (1910-1945), during a visit to Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia, in the year 1933. The three brothers are dressed in formal attire, with Peter wearing the royal crown of Yugoslavia, adding an air of regal grandeur to the scene. At the time of this photograph, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was a relatively young nation, having only been established in 1929 through the merger of the Kingdoms of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. The royal family, which traced its lineage back to the House of Obrenovic and the House of Karadjordjevic, played a significant role in the country's history and politics. The brothers' visit to Zagreb was likely part of an official tour of the kingdom, aimed at strengthening the bonds between the various ethnic groups that made up the Yugoslavian population. The image of the three brothers, united in their royal duties, serves as a powerful symbol of unity and brotherly love during a period of political instability and ethnic tensions. As the years passed, the idyllic scene depicted in this photograph would be shattered by the events of World War II. Peter, Tomislav, and Andrej would all be forced to flee their homeland, with Peter eventually being assassinated in France in 1941. Tomislav and Andrej would both join the Yugoslav Partisans, fighting against the Axis powers, and both would ultimately lose their lives in the conflict. This photograph, taken in 1933, stands as a poignant reminder of a time when the Yugoslavian royal family represented hope and unity for the people of their kingdom, before the darkness of war engulfed the region and changed the course of history.
