EDITORS COMMENTS
During the tumultuous period of World War One, women in Britain proved time and again that they were capable of taking on roles once thought to be the exclusive domain of men. In this photograph, taken in 1917, a group of intrepid women can be seen working at the St Marylebone Borough Electric Sub-station in London. The upper photograph shows one woman operating the main switchboard, meticulously testing the current with a volt-meter. Her concentration is unwavering as she ensures the safe and efficient distribution of electricity to the city. Another woman stands nearby, ready to assist or offer guidance. In the lower photograph, women are seen working on the meter-board for battery-charging. Their dexterity and focus are evident as they manipulate the various components with precision. These women, like countless others, had stepped up to the challenge of the war effort, demonstrating their technical prowess and determination in the face of adversity. The St Marylebone Borough Electric Sub-station was just one of many critical infrastructure sites where women made significant contributions during the conflict. Their presence on the home front was a testament to their versatility and resilience, and helped to keep the city running smoothly despite the upheaval of war. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the vital role women played in British history, challenging gender norms and proving that they were more than capable of excelling in even the most technical and demanding jobs.
