Windmill and water mill, Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex
The Windmill (known as Archers Mill) at Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex. It was a post mill working two pairs of stones, purchased together with the nearby water mill by John Archer in the 19th century. The two vertical sails were the common cloth-covered type being furled from the ground, while the two horizontal sails were of a patent type, their shutters being controlled from inside the mill according to wind strength. Both mills were demolished in 1921.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph, taken in the early 1900s, captures the picturesque scene of Archers Mill at Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex. The mill, also known as Windmill, was a unique combination of a post mill and a water mill, purchased together by John Archer in the late 19th century. The post mill, with its two vertical sails of common cloth-covered type, is seen furled from the ground. In contrast, the water mill, situated nearby, boasts two horizontal patent sails, their shutters controlled from inside the mill according to wind strength. The reflection of the windmills in the tranquil water adds to the serene beauty of the scene. The Edwardian era boat in the foreground adds a sense of scale and completes the idyllic tableau. Unfortunately, both mills were demolished in 1921, making this photograph a precious record of a bygone era.
