Born in New York City, Corcoran made his fortune in the banking and financial industries during a time of great economic growth and transformation in the United States. He began his career as a clerk in a New York City bank and quickly rose through the ranks, eventually founding his own banking firm, Corcoran & Riggs, in partnership with John Riggs.
