EDITORS COMMENTS
William McAuliffe, or W. McAuliffe as he was commonly known, is depicted in this evocative photograph taken at the ancient monument of Stonehenge during a Druid ceremony in the early 20th century. McAuliffe, who was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1867, became a leading figure in the revival of Druidism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was initiated into the Ancient Order of Druids in Ireland in 1887 and went on to become the Chief Druid of the Ancient Order of Druids in England, Wales, and the British Isles in 1911. The photograph captures McAuliffe in the midst of a Druid ceremony at Stonehenge, a site of great historical and spiritual significance to the Druids. The image shows McAuliffe wearing the traditional Druidic robes and holding a ceremonial staff, surrounded by other Druids and onlookers. The sun sets in the background, casting long shadows over the iconic stones, adding to the mystical and otherworldly atmosphere of the scene. The Druids, an ancient Celtic priesthood, are believed to have practiced their religion at Stonehenge over 2,000 years ago. The Druids revered the natural world and believed in the interconnectedness of all things. They held ceremonies at Stonehenge to mark the changing of the seasons and to honor the gods and goddesses of nature. McAuliffe and his followers sought to revive these ancient practices and to promote a modern Druidic spirituality that resonated with the values of the 20th century. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, capturing the spirit of a man who dedicated his life to preserving the traditions of an ancient religion and to connecting people with the natural world. It is a reminder of the enduring allure of Stonehenge and of the human desire to seek meaning and connection through spiritual practices.
