EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite photograph captures a precious moment in the history of the British Monarchy: the presentation of a special wedding gift to Princess Victoria, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Frederick William of Prussia in 1858. The Princess Royal, later known as Empress Frederick, is seen here holding a large-paper copy of Bagster's facsimile octavo polyglot Bible. This extraordinary gift was presented to Victoria by the maidens of the United Kingdom, symbolizing the unity and support of the British people for their future princess consort. The Bible, bound in dark purple with pure gold clasps, is a testament to the religious significance of the occasion. Decorated with the national emblems of England, Scotland, and Ireland - the rose, thistle, and shamrock, respectively - the Bible also features Victoria's coat of arms. This special edition, a large and intricately crafted polyglot, was a fitting present for a royal wedding, reflecting the multilingual nature of the British Empire and the importance of faith in the lives of the royal family. The presentation of this magnificent Bible to Princess Victoria marked the beginning of her journey as a princess consort and future empress. It remains a cherished symbol of the deep connection between the British Monarchy and its people, as well as a reminder of the religious and cultural traditions that have shaped the history of the United Kingdom.
