EDITORS COMMENTS
Warrington Baden-Powell, born on February 22, 1867, is shown in this photograph taken in 1869, at the age of just two years old. This early image captures the childhood of the future founding father of the Scout Movement. Baden-Powell, who would later adopt the surname 'Baden-Powell' in 1893, grew up in a military family and was educated at various schools, including Charterhouse and the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. Before his scouting days, Baden-Powell saw active military service in India, Africa, and China. However, it was during his time as a lieutenant-general, stationed on the island of Malta in 1899, that he began to develop the ideas for an organization that would teach boys outdoor skills and self-reliance. These ideas would eventually evolve into the Scout Movement. The photograph of Warrington Baden-Powell as a toddler offers a glimpse into the early life of this remarkable man. The image is a poignant reminder that even the most influential figures in history began as innocent children, filled with potential and promise. The future Scout Master, who would go on to inspire millions of young people around the world, is seen here as a cherubic, curious, and playful boy, clad in a frilly shirt and holding a large wooden cope. This photograph, taken over a century ago, is an invaluable historical record of Warrington Baden-Powell's early years. It offers a unique perspective on the man behind the Scout Movement and serves as a testament to the enduring impact of his legacy.
