EDITORS COMMENTS
Waldemar II Escapes: A Pivotal Moment in Danish History This evocative print captures the dramatic moment when King Waldemar II of Denmark, also known as Waldemar the Victorious, narrowly escapes defeat at the Battle of Bornhoved in 1227. The battle, which took place near the town of Bornhoved in present-day Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark, was a turning point in Waldemar's career and the history of his kingdom. The scene depicted in the print shows Waldemar II on horseback, surrounded by his defeated soldiers and enemy forces closing in. Despite the odds against him, the king manages to escape with the help of one of his most trusted men, who is shown leading him through the chaos of the battlefield. The expression on Waldemar's face conveys a mixture of relief, determination, and resolve. At this point in his career, Waldemar II had already earned his nickname 'the Victorious' through a series of military victories against various enemies, including the Wends and the Estonians. However, the Battle of Bornhoved marked a rare defeat for the king, one that threatened to undermine his authority and weaken his grip on the Danish throne. Thanks to the timely intervention of his loyal men, Waldemar was able to rally his forces and eventually regain the upper hand. The king went on to reclaim his lost territories and continue his military campaigns, cementing his place in Danish history as a great warrior and leader. This print is a poignant reminder of the pivotal role that loyalty and determination can play in the face of adversity, as well as the importance of leadership in times of crisis. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of Waldemar II and the indomitable spirit of the Danish people.
