He wrote extensively about the need for Greek independence and self-rule, using his pen to inspire and mobilize his fellow countrymen. Rhigas' activism did not go unnoticed by the Turkish authorities, who saw him as a threat to their rule. In 1798, he was arrested and subjected to a brutal trial. Despite international pressure to release him, Rhigas was sentenced to death. He was strangled and his body was unceremoniously thrown into the Danube River.
