EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the historic moment of the unveiling of the first public memorial to the renowned Romantic poet John Keats in Britain, which took place at Hampstead Parish Church in July 1894. The bust, a gift from Keats' American admirers, was imported especially for the occasion and is depicted here being unveiled by the Reverend J.W.C. Wanley, the rector of Hampstead. The event marked a significant milestone in the recognition of Keats' literary legacy in his native country. Born in 1795 in Moorgate, London, Keats is considered one of the greatest poets in the English language. However, his literary career was tragically cut short when he died of tuberculosis at the age of 25. Despite his untimely death, his poetry continued to captivate readers and influenced generations of writers. The bust, sculpted by the American artist, Benjamin Victor, was meticulously crafted to capture the essence of Keats' youthful beauty and poetic spirit. The inscription on the pedestal reads, "John Keats, Born in this Parish, October 31, 1795. Died in Rome, February 23, 1821." The unveiling ceremony was attended by a large crowd of admirers, who gathered to pay tribute to the poet and celebrate his enduring legacy. The event was widely reported in the press, and the bust became an instant attraction for visitors to Hampstead Parish Church. This engraving is a testament to the enduring appeal of John Keats and the deep connection that his poetry continues to evoke in readers around the world. The unveiling of the bust in Hampstead Parish Church was a fitting tribute to a poet whose work continues to inspire and captivate generations.
