EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative portrait, Count Korfits Ulfeldt (1606-1664) is depicted with his beloved wife, Princess Leonora Christina of Denmark (1597-1644), on his lap. The tender moment between the couple reflects the deep affection they shared, despite the challenges they faced in their lives. Count Ulfeldt, a Danish nobleman, rose to prominence in the Danish court under King Christian IV. However, his fortunes took a turn for the worse when he was implicated in a plot against the king in 1627. As a result, he was exiled from Denmark and forced to flee the country with his family. Despite the hardships of exile, the Count's love for his wife remained unwavering. Princess Leonora Christina, who was known for her intelligence, beauty, and strong will, was deeply devoted to her husband. In this portrait, she gazes at him with a look of love and admiration, while he holds her protectively on his lap. The couple eventually found refuge in England, where they lived out the remainder of their lives. They were welcomed by King Charles I and his queen, Henrietta Maria, who were themselves exiles from their native lands. In England, the Count continued to serve in various diplomatic roles, while Princess Leonora Christina became a patron of the arts and a respected figure in English society. Despite the trials and tribulations of their lives, the love between Count Korfits Ulfeldt and Princess Leonora Christina remained a constant force. This poignant portrait serves as a testament to their enduring bond and the power of love to sustain even in the most challenging of circumstances.
