EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the last moments of Greek presence in the ancient city of Smyrna, now known as Izmir, in Turkey. Taken on September 8, 1922, the image shows Greek troops, including cavalry and infantry, entering the city as the Turkish army prepared to take control the following day. The historical significance of this moment is immense, as it marked the end of the Greek occupation of Smyrna, which had lasted for centuries. The Greek troops' entry into the city was not met with resistance from the Turkish forces, but ominous clouds were gathering on the horizon. Just two days later, on September 13, allegations of arson spread throughout the city, leading to a devastating fire that engulfed much of Smyrna. The fire raged for several days, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Thousands of Greeks were forced to flee their homes, and estimates suggest that up to 100,000 people were left homeless or dead. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the complex history between Greece and Turkey, and the tragic consequences of conflict. The image of the Greek troops entering Smyrna is a powerful symbol of the end of an era, and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of this ancient city.
