The image depicts a group of intrepid tourists making their way up the steep and dangerous slopes of Vesuvius, an active volcano located in Italy. Each tourist is carrying a sedan chair, a type of palanquin used for transporting people up steep or difficult terrain. The sedans were often carried by porters or slaves, but in this instance, the tourists themselves have taken on the task, adding an extra layer of challenge to their journey.
