EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a pivotal moment from Act 1 of the 1907 adaptation of Laclos's "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" by Fernand Noziere, performed at Maisons-Lafitte. The scene unfolds in the opulent drawing room of the Marquise de Merteuil (left) and the Vicomte de Valmont (right), as they conspire to ruin the reputations of two innocent young people, the Chevalier Danceny (not in frame) and the Marquise de Tourvel (also not in frame). The historical significance of this production lies in its adaptation by Fernand Noziere, a renowned French playwright and actor. Noziere's interpretation of Laclos's classic novel brought the story to the stage with a modern sensibility, making it accessible to a wider audience. The performance took place at the Théâtre des Capucines in Paris before being transferred to Maisons-Lafitte, a picturesque château located just outside the city. The photograph itself is a testament to the theatrical artistry of the time. The actors, dressed in elegant period costumes, engage in a tense and intense conversation, their expressions revealing the depth of their characters' manipulative intentions. The intricately detailed set design and the soft, diffused lighting create an atmosphere of sophistication and intrigue, transporting us back to a bygone era. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the world of late 19th-century French theatre, providing a fascinating insight into the way classic literature was adapted for the stage and the enduring appeal of Laclos's timeless tale of seduction and betrayal.
