Crew team of the HMS Ceres - winners of the all comers race at the Royal Navy Fleet Rowing Competition, 1928. In the centre is Admiral Sir Victor Alexander Charles Crutchley VC, ) - a senior Royal Navy officer during the Second World War and a First World War recipient of the Victoria Cross. In 1924 he went to the Mediterranean Fleet for four years, serving under Roger Keyes. Crutchley was on HMS Queen Elizabeth in 19241926, and then on the light cruiser HMS Ceres (as pictured here) in 19261928. Date: 1928

This striking photograph captures the victorious team of the HMS Ceres, winners of the All Comers Race at the Royal Navy Fleet Rowing Competition in 1928. At the center of the image stands Admiral Sir Victor Alexander Charles Crutchley, VC (1893-1986), a distinguished senior Royal Navy officer who played a significant role in both World Wars. In the years leading up to this victory, Crutchley served in the Mediterranean Fleet for four years, starting with HMS Queen Elizabeth from 1924 to 1926. He then joined the light cruiser HMS Ceres, as seen in this photograph, from 1926 to 1928. The crew, composed of dedicated sportsmen, proudly display their hard-earned trophy, with their commander, Admiral Crutchley, beaming with pride in the background. This photograph is a testament to the camaraderie, determination, and athleticism of the Royal Navy sailors during the interwar period.
