EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting portrait of HRH Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, captures her youthful beauty and elegance at the age of seventeen. The off-shoulder dress she wears adds a touch of modernity to the classic Tatler photograph taken by Leon Noel on 13th October 1909. Princess Louise, born on 18 March 1848, was the sixth child and fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Her early life was filled with the grandeur and pomp of the royal court, moving among the various residences with her family. However, her disposition was quite different from her siblings. When her father, the Prince Consort, passed away on 14 December 1861, the court went into a period of intense mourning. But Louise, who was unsympathetic to the grief, found solace in her artistic pursuits. She was an accomplished sculptor and artist, and several of her sculptures remain today as a testament to her talent. Princess Louise was also a supporter of the feminist movement and corresponded with Josephine Butler, a leading figure in the fight for women's rights. She believed that the subject of Domestic Economy was the foundation of a true woman's highest life. Her progressive views and artistic talents set her apart from her royal sisters and made her a unique figure in the annals of British royal history. Despite her dislike for having her photograph taken, this rare image offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable princess who defied the conventions of her time.
