Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey - Imperial barge

Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey (1844 - 1918) with his sons in an imperial barge returning to the Old Palace, with the more modern barge standing off in distance (see below). Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1909 until his death in 1918, Mehmed - original name Mehmed Resad - spent much of his life in seclusion until the forced abdication of his brother Sultan Abdul Hamid II at the hands of the Young Turks in 1909. A kindly gentle man with an interest in Persian literature, Mehmed was effectively little more than a puppet Sultan whose actions were directed by leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress. Mehmed was little able to govern of his own accord and thus accepted direction from Young Turk leaders including Enver Pasha. In the rear one can see the Turkish State Barge, the Seughudlu, built by Sir W G Armstrong, Whitworth & Co. Ltd. of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Launched at the Elswick shipyard by the Turkish Ambassadress in 1903

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey, the last Ottoman Sultan, is seen returning to the Old Palace on the Bosphorus with his sons, aboard an imperial barge. The image captures a moment in history as the Sultan, who ruled from 1909 until his death in 1918, navigates the waters of the Bosphorus, surrounded by his entourage. Mehmed V Reshad, originally named Mehmed Resad, spent much of his life in seclusion prior to his brother Sultan Abdul Hamid II's forced abdication by the Young Turks in 1909. A kind and gentle man with a passion for Persian literature, Mehmed was a puppet Sultan whose actions were directed by the leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress. The more modern Turkish State Barge, the Seughudlu, is visible in the background, built by Sir W G Armstrong, Whitworth & Co. Ltd. of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and launched at the Elswick shipyard in 1903. The Seughudlu, which is not visible in the photograph, was a symbol of the Ottoman Empire's modernization efforts. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, with rows of oarsmen propelling the imperial barge forward, while the Old Palace looms in the distance. The contrast between the traditional and the modern is evident, as the Ottoman Empire entered a new era under the guidance of the Young Turks. This historical photograph is a testament to the rich history of the Ottoman Empire and the role of its last Sultan, Mehmed V Reshad, in its final days. The image captures a moment in time, frozen in history, as the Sultan and his sons make their way back to the Old Palace, leaving behind the modern Turkish State Barge in their wake.
