EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in 1910, the Marquis of Lansdowne, Edward Henry Frederick Algernon Russell, 7th Earl of Anglesey and 9th Marquis of Lansdowne (1845-1927), proudly unveils a heroic statue of the 8th Duke of Devonshire, Spencer Compton Cavendish, Lord Hartington (1833-1908), at the entrance to Horseguards Avenue in Central London's Whitehall. The Duke, who served as a Liberal politician, is depicted in military uniform, reflecting his service as a Lieutenant-General in the British Army. The statue, a commemoration of the aristocrat and statesman, stands tall and imposing amidst the grandeur of the avenue, surrounded by an admiring crowd. The Duke of Devonshire, who was also known as the 8th Duke of Devonshire and the 11th Duke of Norfolk, was a prominent figure in late Victorian and Edwardian England. He held numerous political offices, including serving as the Postmaster General and the Lord Privy Seal. His tenure as the President of the Local Government Board saw significant reforms in the areas of education, housing, and public health. The unveiling ceremony, which took place on March 17, 1910, was an important historical event in the aristocratic and political circles of the time. The Marquis of Lansdowne, who was a close friend of the Duke, performed the honors of unveiling the monument, which was designed by the renowned sculptor Thomas Brock (1847-1922). The statue, which stands at the entrance to Horseguards Avenue, remains a significant landmark in Whitehall, commemorating the life and legacy of the 8th Duke of Devonshire. The photograph captures the grandeur and historical significance of the occasion, with the imposing statue, the elegant uniforms of the attendees, and the large, admiring crowd. The image transports us back to an era of aristocratic pageantry and political intrigue, offering a glimpse into the rich history of Central London and the Edwardian period.
