EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Sir George Sinclair, Deputy Governor of Cyprus from 1955 to 1960, during an inspection of 53 UK women police officers upon their arrival at training school in Cyprus in April 1957. Sir George is seen in the background, dressed in a suit and peaked cap, giving his undivided attention to the recruits. Assisting him in the inspection is Assistant Superintendent Joan Partridge, who stands nearer to the camera, also dressed in the smart, light-material uniform of the Metropolitan Police Women's Branch. The women, dressed in short-sleeved uniforms with epaulettes, are seen paying close attention to Sir George's instructions, their faces reflecting a mix of determination and apprehension. The sunny weather and hot conditions are evident in the glinting reflections on their caps and the slight sheen on their uniforms. This image is a testament to the groundbreaking strides made towards gender equality in employment during the 1950s, as women began to make their mark in traditionally male-dominated fields such as law enforcement.
