EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Sibell Mary Lumley, Countess of Grosvenor, is depicted with her young daughter, likely taken around the year 1880. Sibell, born into the noble Lumley family, was the wife of two prominent English figures of the time: first, Victor Alexander, the 4th Earl of Grosvenor, and later, George Wyndham, Member of Parliament. The Countess's elegant and refined appearance is evident in her stylish attire, which includes a high-necked, long-sleeved dress with a fitted bodice and full skirt, accessorized with a delicate lace shawl. Her daughter, dressed in a matching Victorian-era outfit, gazes up at her mother with admiration and affection. Sibell's first marriage to Victor Alexander, Earl of Grosvenor, took place in 1867. The Grosvenor family was one of the wealthiest and most influential in England, owning vast estates and titles. However, their marriage was short-lived, as Victor passed away in 1879. In 1882, Sibell married George Wyndham, who was then a Member of Parliament. Their union was a happy one, and they went on to have several children together. George's political career flourished, and he served as Postmaster General in the Liberal government from 1886 to 1889. This photograph captures a moment in time, showcasing the love and connection between a mother and her child, as well as the grace and elegance of the noblewomen of the Victorian era.
