EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph illustration depicts the enigmatic and sadly extinct Saddle-backed Rodrigues Giant Tortoise, Cylindraspis vosmaeri. This remarkable creature was once indigenous to the Mascarene Island of Mauritius, located in the Indian Ocean. The Saddle-backed Rodrigues Giant Tortoise, also known as Testudo Indica Vosmaer, was named for its distinctive saddle-like carapace, which is thought to have provided additional protection against predators. The last recorded sighting of this tortoise was in the early 19th century, around 1800, making it a fascinating and tragic example of a prehistoric creature that was lost to the world far too soon. The intricate details of this tortoise's appearance, as captured in this illustration by F. John for the publication "Tiere der Urwelt" (Animals of the Prehistoric World) in 1910, serve as a poignant reminder of the rich biodiversity that once existed on our planet. The Saddle-backed Rodrigues Giant Tortoise is not to be confused with the company named Testudo Indica Vosmaer, which is unrelated to this extinct species. This illustration, produced in Hamburg, Germany, is a beautiful and historically significant record of a creature that has long since vanished from the natural world. Its loss is a reminder of the importance of preserving the world's biodiversity and the role that illustrations and historical records play in documenting the natural world for future generations.
