The prestigious award was presented to them in recognition of their groundbreaking achievements in aviation. Accompanying the brothers are Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Charles D. Walcott (second from left), and renowned inventor Alexander Graham Bell (third from left). Bell, who is best known for his work on the telephone, was a close friend and supporter of the Wrights.
