Sir Francis Kennedy McClean, AFC (1876-1955), a pioneering figure in the early days of aviation, is depicted in this black-and-white photograph taken in 1955. McClean's passion for flight began in the early 1900s, and he quickly became an avid aviator, making his first solo flight in 1910. Over the next few decades, he would go on to break numerous records and make significant contributions to the development of military aviation. McClean joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1912, and during World War I, he served as a flight instructor and test pilot. He was awarded the Air Force Cross (AFC) for his bravery and achievements in the war.
