EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in 1931, Miss Delphine Reynolds and her pilot, W.G. Pudney, are seen standing next to their Blackburn Bluebird IV aircraft at Cape Juby in Northwest Africa. The pair had embarked on a daring survey flight from Hanworth, England, on 1 March 1931, with the intention of traveling down the West African coast to Tangier and then on to Bathurst, Gambia. The Blackburn Bluebird IV, registration number G-ABGF, was a single-engine, two-seat biplane that was well-suited for long-distance flights. However, the harsh conditions of the African climate took a toll on the metal airframe, and after two and a half months in Sierra Leone, the corrosion had become too severe for repairs. In this image, the desolate landscape of Cape Juby is dotted with petrol barrels, a reminder of the vital role that aviation fuel played in enabling this pioneering flight. The rugged terrain and extreme climate presented numerous challenges for Miss Reynolds and Mr. Pudney, but their determination and skill saw them through, making history as they became the first people to fly from Europe to West Africa in a light aircraft. Despite the arduous journey, the pair's spirit remains unbroken as they pose confidently for the camera, their aircraft standing proudly behind them. This photograph is a testament to their courage, resilience, and the spirit of adventure that drove them to undertake this groundbreaking flight.
