EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment an Avro Vulcan B2 bomber from No 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron, RAF Waddington, Lincoln, climbs away from Nellis Air Force Base (AFB) in the United States during exercise Red Flag in April 1980. The Vulcan, a iconic British jet known for its distinctive delta wing design and versatile capabilities, was a staple of the Royal Air Force's strategic bombing fleet during the Cold War. No 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron, formed in 1942, was a notable unit in the RAF, with a rich history that included service in World War II, the Suez Crisis, and the Rhodesian Bush War. By the late 1970s, the squadron had transitioned to the Vulcan B2, a variant of the Vulcan bomber that featured upgraded avionics and improved performance. Red Flag, a multinational military training exercise, provided an opportunity for the RAF to test its capabilities against a diverse range of adversaries and scenarios. In this photograph, the Vulcan is seen ascending into the clear Nevada sky, its wings casting long shadows on the desert landscape below. The exercise marked the final chapter in the RAF's use of the Vulcan, as the jet was retired from service in 1984. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Avro Vulcan's storied history and the important role it played in the RAF's strategic arsenal.
