EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image captures the aftermath of the tragic sinking of HMS Royal George during refitting at Spithead in 1782. Rear-Admiral Richard Kempenfelt, a respected naval officer, is depicted in the foreground, mourning the loss of his men, tradesmen, women, and children who perished in the disaster. The Royal George, a formidable 100-gun first-rate ship of the line, had been undergoing repairs when she suddenly heeled over and sank, taking the lives of an estimated 800 people. Kempenfelt, who had been overseeing the refit, was among the casualties. The disaster was a significant blow to the British Navy, which was already engaged in the ongoing American Revolutionary War. This historic photograph, taken from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Prints Online, serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of maritime warfare and the sacrifices made by those who served in the Royal Navy.
