EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the intense gaze and distinguished bearing of Major General Reginald Pole-Carew (1849-1924), a renowned British Army officer who rose to the rank of General Officer Commanding 8th Division during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The image, titled "Polly," was taken in the year 1901, a time when the British military was heavily engaged in the Second Boer War in South Africa. Born into a noble family, Pole-Carew entered the military as an officer in the Coldstream Guards in 1868. He saw active service in various campaigns, including the Anglo-Zulu War and the Second Afghan War. In 1899, as the Boer War broke out, Pole-Carew was appointed as the Chief of Staff to Lord Methuen, the commander of the British forces in South Africa. He later took command of the 8th Division in 1900, leading his troops in several significant battles, including the Relief of Kimberley and the Battle of Paardeberg. Despite facing numerous challenges and hardships during the war, Pole-Carew's leadership and strategic acumen proved invaluable to the British forces. His successes earned him numerous accolades, including the Distinguished Service Order and the Breast Star to the KCB. After the war, Pole-Carew continued to serve in various military capacities, retiring from the army in 1913. This photograph is an enduring testament to Pole-Carew's military career and his significant contributions to British military history. With his steely gaze and impeccable uniform, he exudes a sense of determination, courage, and authority that is both captivating and inspiring.
