This engraving from The Spanish and American Illustration, published in 1886, captures a poignant moment during the Regency of Maria Cristina of Habsburg-Lorraine in Spain (1885-1902). Following the death of King Alfonso XII in 1885, Maria Cristina, his widow and mother of his only child, Alfonso XIII, assumed the role of regent. In this image, the queen regent is seen descending the stairs of the Royal Palace in Madrid, surrounded by her consort, Alphonse, and their young children. The queen, dressed in mourning attire, looks down at her subjects with a solemn expression, while her children cling to her, adding an emotional depth to the scene.
