EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving from The Spanish and American Illustration, published in 1886, captures a poignant moment during the Regency of Maria Cristina of Habsburg-Lorraine in Spain (1885-1902). Following the death of King Alfonso XII in 1885, Maria Cristina, his widow and mother of his only child, Alfonso XIII, assumed the role of regent. In this image, the queen regent is seen descending the stairs of the Royal Palace in Madrid, surrounded by her consort, Alphonse, and their young children. The queen, dressed in mourning attire, looks down at her subjects with a solemn expression, while her children cling to her, adding an emotional depth to the scene. The formation of the regency was a significant moment in Spanish history, as Maria Cristina was an Austrian archduchess from the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, making her the first non-Bourbon monarch in Spain since the late fifteenth century. The regency was also marked by political instability and the struggle for power between various factions. The scene outside the palace is bustling with activity, as people gather to catch a glimpse of their queen regent and her family. Soldiers stand guard, ensuring the safety of the royal family as they make their way through the crowd. This engraving offers a glimpse into the historical context of the Regency of Maria Cristina of Habsburg-Lorraine, providing a window into the political and social climate of Spain during the late nineteenth century.
