EDITORS COMMENTS
Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent: A Symbol of Renewal and Transformation in Pre-Columbian Mexico This evocative image depicts Quetzalcoatl, the ancient Mexican deity revered as the Feathered Serpent, God of Winds, and the Bringer of Civilization. Believed to have originated around 1500 AD during the Postclassic period of Mesoamerican civilization, Quetzalcoatl was a central figure in the religious beliefs of various indigenous cultures in present-day Mexico and Central America. Quetzalcoatl was often depicted as a serpent or feathered serpent, with the head of a man, eagle, or jaguar. His name is derived from the Nahuatl words 'quetzalli' (feather) and 'coatl' (serpent), reflecting his association with both the natural world and the cosmos. Quetzalcoatl was considered a creator deity, responsible for the creation of the sun, the stars, and the human race. He was also the patron of merchants, travelers, and artists, and was believed to have the power to bring about renewal and transformation. The arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century brought about the spread of Christianity, leading to the syncretization of indigenous beliefs with Catholicism. Quetzalcoatl was often identified with Saint Thomas the Apostle, who was believed to have visited Mexico before the arrival of the Spanish. As a result, Quetzalcoatl came to be known as 'Quetzalcoatl-Xiuhtecuhtli,' or Quetzalcoatl the Turquoise-Feathered One, and was celebrated as a Christian saint. Despite the spread of Christianity, the legacy of Quetzalcoatl and other pre-Columbian deities continued to influence Mexican culture, shaping its rich religious and artistic traditions. Today, Quetzalcoatl remains an important symbol of Mexican history and identity, inspiring artists, writers, and scholars around the world.
