This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in the tumultuous reign of Queen Anne (1702-1714) of Great Britain, as she intercedes with her father-in-law, the Duke of Gloucester, and the Earl of Arundel, in a desperate attempt to spare the life of Sir Simon Burley. The scene is set in 1388, during a time of political upheaval and power struggles, as Queen Anne's husband, the Prince of Wales, lay dying, leaving her as the heir to the throne. Sir Simon Burley, a favorite of the late Prince, had been a key figure in the political intrigue leading up to the Prince's death. However, he had fallen out of favor with the powerful Gloucester and Arundel, who saw him as a threat to their own ambitions.
