EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting black-and-white photograph, Princess Theodora of Greece and her eldest child, Princess Margarita Alice of Baden, share a tender moment in 1932. The Princess, dressed in a simple yet elegant dress, cradles her newborn niece in her arms, gazing down at her with a loving expression. The young Margarita, swaddled in soft blankets, stares back at her aunt with curious eyes, her tiny hands reaching out towards her. Princess Theodora was the younger sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and the eldest daughter of King Constantine I of Greece and Queen Sophie of Prussia. After the fall of the Greek monarchy in 1922, Theodora and her family were exiled, and they eventually settled in Paris. In 1931, Theodora married Maximilian, Margrave of Baden, and the couple had five children. Margarita, born on March 19, 1932, was the eldest child of Theodora and Maximilian. She grew up in Germany, where her father served as the Margrave of Baden from 1933 until his death in 1942. Margarita's childhood was marked by the turmoil of World War II, but she went on to live a long and fulfilling life, marrying Prince Tomislav of Yugoslavia in 1955 and having three children. This photograph captures a precious moment in the lives of two royal women, a sister and her niece, as they bond over the arrival of a new family member. The image is a poignant reminder of the personal connections that exist within the complex web of royal families and their histories.
