EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken on July 12, 1911, the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, is seen traveling in an open carriage with his parents, King George V and Queen Mary, through the streets of Caernarvon, Wales, during his Investiture ceremony. The royal family is dressed in formal attire, with the Prince and his father wearing ermine-trimmed robes and the Queen in a traditional Victorian gown and parasol. The Investiture of the Prince of Wales was a grand and traditional ceremony held to formally bestow the title of Prince of Wales upon the eldest son of the monarch. The event was steeped in medieval customs and symbolism, reflecting the rich history and heritage of the British monarchy. The carriage, adorned with royal crests and banners, passes through the gates of Caernarvon Castle, a medieval fortress that has stood guard over the town for over 700 years. The castle, with its imposing walls and towers, adds to the sense of history and tradition surrounding the Investiture. The Prince, who would go on to become the Duke of Windsor after his abdication in 1936, looks out at the cheering crowds with a confident and regal expression. His parents, the King and Queen, are also visible in the carriage, smiling and waving to their subjects. The Investiture of the Prince of Wales at Caernarvon was a significant moment in British royal history, marking the beginning of the Prince's journey towards becoming the monarch. This photograph captures the grandeur and tradition of the ceremony, as well as the close bond between the royal family and their people.
