EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black-and-white photograph captures a young Prince Henry, later known as the Duke of Gloucester, during his time as a private in the Eton College Officers Training Corps (OTC) at Tidworth Camp in 1916. As the third son of King George V and Queen Mary, Prince Henry was not expected to follow a military career, but his passion for the military led him to join the OTC. This experience would prove invaluable when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers in 1917, and later saw active service in World War I. In this image, the future Duke of Gloucester is seen in full uniform, holding a rifle and gazing intently into the distance. The photograph captures the seriousness and determination of the young man, who was already demonstrating his commitment to serving his country. The setting of the camp at Tidworth, with its rolling hills and military tents, adds to the sense of a pivotal moment in history, as the world was embroiled in the devastating conflict of World War I. Prince Henry's time in the OTC was formative, not only in terms of his military training but also in shaping his character. He went on to have a long and distinguished military career, serving in both World War I and World War II, and becoming the longest-serving member of the British Royal Family. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a young man's dedication to duty and service, and the sacrifices made by so many during the turbulent years of the First World War.
