EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts Pocahontas, also known as Matoaka, the legendary American Indian princess and daughter of the powerful Powhatan chief. Born around 1596, Pocahontas is renowned for her role in the early history of the English colonization of Virginia. Here, she is depicted in her traditional native attire, adorned with intricately designed beadwork, a feathered headdress, and a long, flowing dress. She holds a spear in her right hand, symbolizing her warrior status and strength. Pocahontas' encounter with English explorer John Smith in 1607 marked the beginning of a complex and influential relationship between the two cultures. Smith was saved from execution by Pocahontas, who later took him as her captive and eventually fell in love with him. Their marriage in 1614, the first recorded interracial marriage in the English colonies, was a significant event in the early history of the New World. This photograph, taken in the late 19th or early 20th century, is a testament to the enduring fascination with Pocahontas' story. The model wears an authentic reproduction of the native costume, complete with intricate beadwork, bangles, and a head dress, to capture the essence of Pocahontas' iconic appearance. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to imagine the rich and complex world of the Powhatan people and their interactions with the English settlers.
