EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a pivotal moment from Pierre Corneille's classic French play, "Le Cid" (1637), based on the historical character Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, also known as El Cid. In the play, Rodrigo, a proud and noble Spanish knight, is torn between his duty to the king and his love for his wife, Donna Jimena. Here, we see Rodrigo (played by Pierrot le Greco in this production) and Donna Jimena (portrayed by Suzanne Cloutier) in a poignant scene, where she implores him to choose between his honor and their marriage. Corneille's "Le Cid" is considered one of the greatest works in the French classical theatre tradition. Written in 1636, it is a tragic tale of love, honor, and duty set against the backdrop of medieval Spain. The play is renowned for its exploration of the complexities of human emotions and the conflicts between personal desires and societal expectations. Rodrigo, a legendary figure in Spanish history, is known for his military prowess and unwavering loyalty to the crown. However, his love for Donna Jimena, the king's daughter, puts him in a precarious position. When the king demands that Rodrigo leave his family to lead the army against the Moors, Rodrigo is faced with an impossible choice. He ultimately decides to follow the king's orders, leading to a series of tragic consequences. This evocative print captures the intensity and emotion of this historical play, immortalizing a moment of heartfelt pleading between Rodrigo and Donna Jimena. The intricately detailed costumes and the expressive body language of the actors transport us to the world of "Le Cid," a world filled with passion, honor, and sacrifice.
