Pierre Edouard Lemoine (1762-1826), a prominent French jurist and writer, is depicted in this portrait. Born in Paris, Lemoine studied law at the University of Orleans and quickly rose through the ranks of the legal profession. His exceptional intellect and profound understanding of the law earned him a position as a magistrate in the Court of Appeals of Paris. Lemoine's contributions to the legal world extended beyond the courtroom. He was a prolific writer, authoring numerous works on jurisprudence, criminal law, and legal philosophy. His most famous publication, "Traité des Delits et des Peines," or "Treatise on Crimes and Punishments," was a comprehensive study of criminal law that remained a standard reference for over a century. This image captures Lemoine in the prime of his career, with a serious yet thoughtful expression that reflects his deep commitment to the law and the pursuit of justice.
