EDITORS COMMENTS
Pierre Dupuy: A Devoted Servant to Knowledge and Power in 17th Century France This evocative portrait captures the distinguished features and intellectual intensity of Pierre Dupuy (1582-1651), a renowned French historian, counsellor to King Louis XIV, and curator of the royal library. Born in Tours, Dupuy's passion for history and learning was evident from an early age. He began his career as a professor of Greek and Latin at the Collège de Lisieux in Paris, where he honed his skills as a scholar. Dupuy's dedication to historical research and writing soon caught the attention of the French court, leading to his appointment as a historian and counsellor to King Louis XIII in 1615. He continued in this role under Louis XIV, becoming a trusted advisor and confidant to the monarch. In addition to his work as a historian and counsellor, Dupuy was also appointed curator of the royal library in 1637. He oversaw the expansion and organization of the vast collection, which would become one of the most impressive libraries in Europe. Dupuy's commitment to preserving and disseminating knowledge was unwavering, and he played a crucial role in ensuring that the royal library remained a center of intellectual inquiry and innovation. This portrait, likely taken towards the end of Dupuy's life, captures the wisdom and gravitas of a man who dedicated himself to the pursuit of knowledge and the service of his king. With his piercing gaze and meticulously arranged attire, Dupuy exudes the air of a man who has spent a lifetime immersed in the greatest minds and ideas of his time. His legacy as a historian, counsellor, and curator continues to inspire scholars and history enthusiasts to this day.
